Understanding the Psychology of Your Customers

How the Zoo Taught Me about Understanding Customers

      · Differentiation,restaurant start up,customers,customer engagement

Do you want to make more money with your small business? Understanding the psychology of your potential customers is the key to your success. I learned this lesson while designing zoological exhibits over 30 years ago. To create a successful exhibit, I had to observe and study the behavior of the zoo patrons. Everything from where they stood or sat to where shade was required helped me design a successful exhibit.

So, what does this have to do with your business? Everything! Researching and interpreting your potential customers is critical to your long-term success. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

      • Have you ever asked your customers how they found you?
      • Have you noticed the path your customers take into your store or restaurant?
      • Which areas of your store or restaurant do your customers visit the most?
      • Have you received honest feedback about your products or services from your customers?
      • Do you track your product sales to eliminate items that don't sell well?
      • Have you asked your customers what products or services they wish you offered?

Here's your psychology assignment for the month:

      • Engage with all of your customers regularly and ask them about your business.
      • Ask questions like, "How are we doing?", "Is there anything we could do to make your experience better?", and "Are there any products or services we could offer for greater convenience and value?"

By collecting data from your customers, you'll be in a better position to make changes that better serve them. Implementing these changes will ultimately put more money in your pocket. Understanding the psychology of your customers is the key to success in any business. Now go out there and analyze away!
